# Converting Prezi to PowerPoint: how-to, limitations and alternatives

> Prezi can download a presentation directly as a PowerPoint file (PPTX), either from the dashboard via the presentation's menu or from the editor via Share. The structure of the Prezi becomes individual slides. But the file is a static version for sharing: it can't be edited in PowerPoint, and zooms, animations and videos are lost. The export is a feature of Prezi's paid plans.

The presentation was built in Prezi, but someone needs it as a PowerPoint. The client wants to forward it internally, a colleague in sales only works with PowerPoint, or IT doesn't allow a browser on the presentation computer. **The good news: Prezi can do this itself.**

## How to convert a Prezi to PowerPoint

Prezi offers its own download as a PowerPoint file (PPTX). There are two ways.

### Option 1: from the dashboard

1. Open your Prezi dashboard and find the presentation.
2. Open the menu on the presentation's thumbnail.
3. Choose the PPTX download. The file is generated and saved to your device.

### Option 2: from the editor

1. Open the presentation in the editor.
2. Click **Share** in the top right corner.
3. Choose the PPTX option from the menu and confirm in the window that opens.

Labels in Prezi can change with new versions. If a menu item has a different name, search the Prezi help center for “PPTX”.

## What you get and what you lose

**What you get:** the look of your content. The structure of the Prezi becomes individual slides.

**What you lose:** zooms and camera movements, animations, videos and the overview on the canvas. And above all: the slides can't be edited in PowerPoint.

Prezi itself describes the PPTX as a **static version for sharing**. That's important for your expectations: you don't get a PowerPoint you can keep working on, but a slide version of your content to look at.

## When converting is worth it

The PowerPoint version of a Prezi makes sense when:

- **the presentation gets passed on**, for example as a handout after a pitch that circulates internally,
- **someone without Prezi needs it**, for example in sales or in a department with fixed PowerPoint requirements,
- **it gets sent as an email attachment** to people who can't or won't open a Prezi link.

For presenting itself, the converted file is rarely the best choice. Whoever presents should show the Prezi. If there's no internet, that works offline too with a paid plan, in the Prezi app or as a downloaded presentation.

## What to watch out for

- **Check every slide.** Especially where content in Prezi sits on top of or inside other content, a slide in PowerPoint can look different from what you expect.
- **Don't count on editing.** If you want to change text or rearrange slides, you need to do it in the Prezi and download it again. If you need a real, editable PowerPoint, it has to be redesigned. That's what we do as part of our [PowerPoint presentation design](https://mcprezi.com/en/presentation-design/powerpoint/).
- **Think about who reads the file.** A Prezi is built for presenting, while a handout often needs more explanation. If necessary, add a slide with the key points.
- **Be careful with online converters.** There are services online that offer to convert Prezis into PowerPoint. With confidential content, the rule is: don't upload presentations to providers you don't know. Going directly through Prezi is the safer route.

## And the other way round: PowerPoint to Prezi

The other direction is requested more often and works quite differently. Prezi can import PowerPoint files, with help from Prezi AI too. The slides then sit on the canvas, but at its core the presentation is still a sequence of slides.

For a presentation to work like a Prezi, it takes more than an import: a canvas where the topics are arranged meaningfully, an overview and zooms that follow the story. **That's not a technical conversion, it's a retelling.** That's exactly what we do when we [convert PowerPoint to Prezi](https://mcprezi.com/en/presentation-design/convert-powerpoint-to-prezi/).

## Conclusion

**Converting a Prezi to PowerPoint works directly in Prezi, in three steps.** You get a static PPTX without zooms, animations or videos that can't be edited in PowerPoint. That's ideal for sharing. For presenting, the Prezi remains the better choice. And if you want to go the other way, you need more than an import: a new story on the canvas.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you convert a Prezi to PowerPoint?

Yes. Prezi offers its own download as a PowerPoint file (PPTX), from the dashboard via the presentation's menu or from the editor via Share. The feature is part of Prezi's paid plans.

### Are zooms and animations kept when converting?

No. The PPTX is a static version. The structure of the Prezi becomes individual slides, but there are no zooms, animations or videos in the PowerPoint file, and it can't be edited in PowerPoint either.

### Are there free Prezi to PowerPoint converters?

Various online converters are on offer. But downloading directly from Prezi is the most reliable route, and your content never leaves your Prezi account. With confidential presentations, you shouldn't upload files to services you don't know.

### Can you convert a PowerPoint into Prezi?

Prezi can import PowerPoint files, and the slides then sit on the canvas. For the presentation to work like a Prezi, the story has to be retold on the canvas. That's exactly what we do when we [convert PowerPoint to Prezi](https://mcprezi.com/en/presentation-design/convert-powerpoint-to-prezi/).

### Can I download a Prezi as a PDF?

Yes, on the paid plans. Like the PowerPoint file, the PDF is a static version without zooms, well suited as a handout.
